By Kyle Lanclos
I wanted to replace my at-home fileserver, and didn't feel like using recycled hardware (again) was going to buy me much time. I wound up choosing between the Fujitsu Primergy MX 130 S2 ($200), and an HP Proliant Microserver N40L ($350). The Fujitsu has a few things going for it: it's cheaper, faster, and you can install more RAM (16 GB vs. 8 GB). The HP has more drive slots available, but that wasn't an issue for my needs. Both support ECC memory, which is a must for long-term data storage. My Fujitsu server is now running FreeBSD 9.0, with an Intel solid-state drive as the boot drive, and two 3 TB drives in an ZFS mirror for my data storage. I encountered zero compatibility issues with any of the hardware. The computer is nearly silent when I spin down the 3 TB drives. I was going to purchase more RAM, since 8 GB of the right RAM is really cheap ($80) at the moment, but it runs so well with the 2 GB it came with that I may leave it alone. There are two internal 3.5" drive bays, a single 5.25" bay, and a bonus slot that looks like it's designed to fit a slimline CD/DVD drive. With my three drives, I feel like I'm fully occupying the available slots, though one could buy a bracket and install a pair of 2.5" drives in a 3.5" slot. Short version: you can fit three drives easily, maybe four if you're mildly creative, but anything beyond that would require a bit of ingenuity. There are six internal SATA ports, so your efforts would not be completely wasted. My only negative thus far is that the case is a bit hard to open, and I didn't find any instructions that would provide clues on the best technique. There is a plastic tab on the back of the case that you slide over into an "unlocked" position, at which point the tab is "caught" until you open the case (though you can release it with a small screwdriver). From there, you slide the top half of the case forward a few centimeters; getting it started is the hard part.I'm pretty happy with the purchase, especially considering the low price. This is probably not a good platform for a 3D-gaming setup, but it is well-suited for other light-duty work, such as a single-monitor workstation, or a home or small office Linux/BSD server.

This server works good for simple task. It's not the fastest but for 200 bucks I linked a few computers to it and used it as a main server. No complaints so far.

By Fooman
These are "fun" little servers for background processes and non-high demanding environments; I picked up a couple and one is running fine as an asterisk server and the other as an intranet web server and (djb)dns backup. Even with higher traffic they seem to hold up fine and load times haven't even peaked! Running latest stable debian on both and the 8 minute installation was a snap.I did pick up some good memory to go with these and plan on adding a few more to our office environment for redundancy and failover servers. For the price, low profile, and low power consumption these are hard to beat!
