I am using this server as a home ESXi lab. It runs about 40W which is great compared to the 100W+ that my old P4 based desktop was burning. Right now I am just running 3 VM's, 2 of which are Linux Oracle RAC and have had no issues at all. The HP iLO and Intelligent Provisioning are awesome, I didn't really expect use those features, but in hindsight I am glad I have them. The propitiatory hard drive issue is annoying in that no 3rd parties are selling drive caddies in LFF to put off the shelf drives in, but I temporarily solved that issue by modifying the three drive blanks that come in the drive cage to hold off the shelf drives and this solution has been working well.

They changed the drive caddys for the gen 8 servers and drives from older servers won't fit. HP won't sell you the new caddys and say that hard drives from older servers are not compatible. Now I am supposed to replace $2000 of hard drives just so I can use this $600 server. Sorry HP, it would be cheaper for me to throw this brand new server in the trash and buy another brand than it would be to buy HPs over priced proprietary drives.
