By J. Ferreira
This item is the real deal, factory sealed from IBM and has the E3-1235. This item is selling for double this price on other sites. I was concerned at first with the it being so cheap but the specs are right on. No HDD Included just for reference, I slapped a spare 120gb in there and did a dry run of installing Ubuntu 10.04LTS last night.

By Carl Franklin
Love it! I've purchased Lenovo laptops before but not a Lenovo server/workstation. My experience has been pretty good so far. I placed my order with Antonline late on Monday (but not through Amazon) and received the unit via UPS mid-day on Thursday. That's outstanding free shipping during the week before Christmas! The package was well protected with all parts present and working. Why did I buy this puppy? It's overkill at a bargain price. I've been using an older 17" HP laptop with an i7-Q720 at 1.6GHz (PassMark 3123) as my main machine for years. It drives two 1920x1200 monitors, a USB 2.0 hub, an eSATA HDD, and a USB LAN adapter. Unfortunately, this load makes it run very warm despite swapping out the hard drive for an SSD and adding a cooling plate. Activities like MP4 video transcoding make overheating a real danger. I decided to replace the HP with a faster machine that has better expansion options.I considered building an i7 desktop with all the trimmings (including Thunderbolt) but then I saw this. $400 for an E3-1235 server is an unbelievable deal! The CPU alone runs over $250 here on Amazon (Xeon E3-1235 Processor). The E3-1235 is basically a slightly tweaked Sandy Bridge i7 CPU with integrated HD3000 graphics (relabeled as P3000). Its PassMark performance falls between an i7-2500 (6327) and i7-2600 (8394) with a score of 8023. Plus, the E3-1235/TS130 will run Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Small Business Server 2011, etc. Heck, there are even multiple threads at tonymacx86 indicating this CPU supports Mac OS Lion. (I'm not that adventuresome. I installed Windows 8 Pro with Classic Shell to take advantage of an Acer T230H touchscreen monitor.)Processor aside, the TS130 server has some unusual features that make it very appealing as my main workstation. The VGA and DisplayPort outputs make it possible to run two monitors at once. (Of course, I'm not a gamer so business class graphics are fine.) Also, the motherboard has built-in audio with standard 3.5mm TRS ports on the back of the case (microphone input, stereo input, stereo output). If that's not enough, the 8 USB 2.0 ports make it simple to add an external 7.1 audio device down the road. Then, there's the internal expansion capability. The four RAM slots can be filled to 16GB with non-ECC RAM and 32GB with ECC RAM. There are two 6GB/s SATA III and two 3GB/s SATA II ports. That's SSD nirvana with built-in RAID 0/1 capability. For me, the 4 PCI slots are the clincher: a PCIe x16, a PCIe x1, and two PCI 5V slots. I've installed a SYBA USB 3.0 card (SD-PEX20122) connected to an Anker® Uspeed USB 3.0 3.5 inch Front Panel to add a total of four USB 3.0 ports very inexpensively. Sure, it's not Thunderbolt but USB 3.0 is very fast and versatile.Another TS130 feature that hasn't received a lot of attention here on Amazon is the 280W, 85% efficient power supply. That doesn't sound like much but it has more power than many competitors offer (like the Acer AC100). Why is the power supply important? I tried upgrading a 250W Fujitsu Siemens TX100 S2 server with some goodies like the SYBA card but it just couldn't handle them without supplementary power. Unfortunately, there's no spare P4 connector on the TX100 power supply. (Actually, it doesn't have any P4-style connectors.) I checked into replacing the TX100 power supply but Fujitsu managed to make it proprietary by adding a special PC2009 connector to the motherboard. To make a long story short, the Lenovo TS130 PS (LITEON PS-5281-02VA) has an available P4 and the whole unit looks like it can be swapped out with a standard ATX power supply should the need arise. Awesome! Finally, let me tell you how quiet and reliable the TS130 is. I can barely hear the thing two feet away on my desktop. My old HP laptop and cooling plate make a lot more noise under load. Plus, I'm very reluctant to run the HP 24x7 while the TS130 is designed to do just that. It easily handles home media server duties while simultaneously performing typical office chores.Pros:See comments above.Cons:1. Ships with a single Samsung 4GB ECC RAM stick. Adding memory is not a problem but slot 1 is very close to the heat fins for the CPU. (See photo.)2. The P4 connector (numbered P7) is stretched almost to its limit to reach the SYBA USB 3.0 card I installed in the PCIe x1 slot. (It blocks the PCIe x16 slot so when I fill that I'll need to get an extender to still power the SYBA card.) See photo.3. Installing an optical drive/tape backup/USB 3.0 ports in the front of the case requires that the device stick out significantly to be flush with the front plastic panel. (See photo.)Conclusion:While the Lenovo TS130 has some minor issues, it's a fabulous machine at a ridiculously low price. You'll need a monitor, SSD/hard drive, keyboard, mouse, OS, and seatbelt to use this as a workstation but many tinkerers like myself have these lying around or know how to get them inexpensively. (Microsoft is selling Windows 8 Pro for $40 until 1/31/13 and Classic Shell is free--what's not to like?) No doubt Lenovo is moving these out to make room for an improved model but don't let that stop you. It comes with a 1-year warranty and excellent phone and online support. This system will perform superbly as a workstation or server for a long, long time.
