I had a lot of trouble using a Windows 2008 Server with a fax/modem as my fax server. This was using the built-in fax server in the operating system. It was frequently unreliable, and as a result, wasted lots of time chasing weird issues. We started using a fax to e-mail service, but their software for printing from Windows applications didn't work too well.This Multi-Tech product is definitely not cheap, at least compared with a USB or serial fax/modem. However, I was looking for a hardware device that would just work, and allow multiple to send and receive faxes. This product is pretty close to being what I was looking for, but it is a little rough around the edges.Our setup was to receive faxes onto a network drive, but still be able to fax out using a fax machine. It took a little tinkering, but I was able to get the device to receive faxes on two lines, but send using only one. This was to keep our fax line open as much as possible to receive faxes, but use a non-public number for sending faxes.In a Windows environment, I had to make some changes to Exchange Server to allow the device to forward faxes as e-mails. This information was available in their knowledge base, and wasn't too hard to follow.I was never able to get it to work with a Windows networked folder, and ended up having to go a circuitous route to make it work. The files get saved to a Linux Samba networked folder, and then, an automated process on the Windows server would periodically copy the file from the Linux machine to the Windows environment. This is a kludge at best, and I wish that Multi-Tech would polish their firmware a little to get it to work.Creating a fax cover sheet was not too bad, but a little of a pain having to use Adobe Acrobat to create a form. But it does work.Sending faxes works through e-mail, their Windows printer driver, or from the internal web site. Receiving can be set to forward as e-mail or to save in a network drive.Overall, this product does what you would intend it to do: allow sending and receiving faxes without having to waste tons of paper. We've been using it for a few months, and haven't had to reboot it. The product is a bit pricey, however. So for some, a fax service may be a better match. You'd have to work out the break-even point for your scenario. There should be a little more polish for such an expensive device, but there aren't too many alternatives if you want a stand-alone device, and not have to pay for a software fax server on top of a hardware fax board.
